Just a disclaimer: These reviews are informed by our opinion of these products, as well as extensive research. Either way, let us know—we are interested to know your opinions and answer your questions.

What is a Sub Ohm Tank?

Why is it called a sub ohm tank, do you ask? Well, there’s a pretty rudimentary answer to that question. A sub ohm tank’s atomizer coil has a resistance of less than one ohm, and runs standard from the 0.5ohm coil all the way down to 0.1ohm. All you need is a mod that will fire down to the ohm resistance of the coil you choose to buy.

With this particular type of tank, you can generate the same cloud chasing and favorable experience you would receive from using an RDA or RTA. However, with this brilliantly engineered device, you don’t have to build and solder your own coils— replaceable coils are readily available for purchase. So, if you’re not comfortable building your own coil, but want that same experience, sub ohm tanks are perfect for you!

Your next question may be, “How do I choose a device that is most equipped to fire with the sub ohm tank that I choose?” We advocate that you use a box mod with a sub ohm tank for the optimum vaping experience. All you need to do is check out our Best Mod Boxes of 2016 article, and we will guide you in the right direction. All of the specs, including the box mods sub ohm resistance are listed right there!

But, what batteries do I use for a box mod/sub ohm tank combination? Don’t worry; we have your safety in mind. When using a high-powered mod with a low ohm coil, 18650 batteries are your best choice across the board, which we will go into in another article.

Conclusively, sub ohm tanks deliver a savory and cloudy warmth of goodness. Because, with this tank, the atomizer has a larger wick and coil, which lends itself to gorgeous billowy clouds delivering intense flavor. The equation from this combination: More Vapor = More Flavor.

But Hey, Sub Ohm Tanks Might Not Be For You. Want To Know Why?

Here are some of the main reasons why vapers enjoy a different vaping style:

  • Stealth Vaping—Sometimes, you need to be a Jedi when you vape, using a force that you don’t want seen by everybody. Because of the large clouds produced by sub ohm clearomizers, being a Jedi isn’t really a possibility.
  • Mouth to Lung Inhale—So, you just quit cigarettes, but want that same inhalation style? Trust us, all vapers go through this. Sub ohm tanks have air flow control. What you are looking for is a tank without airflow, so you may want to try a different type of tank.
  • Amount of E-Juice—Because of the amount of vapor produced in sub ohm vaping, you may go through a lot of e-liquid, and thus much more nicotine. If you don’t want to go though a lot of e-juice, or don’t want to inhale that much nicotine at once, we wouldn’t recommend using a sub ohm clearomizer.
  • Portability—You may want a vaporizer that you can fit in your pocket when you’re on the go. The combination of a sub ohm/box mod doesn’t really offer much mobility in this regard. Well, what’s the smallest sub ohm tank you ask? There are a few, but we recommend the SMOK TFV-4 Mini or Aspire Cleito, among others.

0-100 Wattage Range

SMOK TFV4 Mini

SMOK TFV4 Mini

Price: $44.95
Wattage Range: S6 (30-100W), CLP2 (30-90W)
Tank Capacity: 3.5ml
Coils Available: 0.4 ohm S6, 0.35 ohm CLP2
Wicking material: Cotton
RBA: TF-RCA/RBA head included (pre-built Clapton Installed & extra wire provided)
Diameter: 22mm

Pros

Was the full-size TFV4 too big for your liking? Well, luckily for you, SMOK came out with a miniature version that’s reduced by 2.5mm in diameter, and will still compliment your mod. The TFV4 Mini comes with a selection of coils, jut like it’s older brother: a RBA pre-Calpton build, a CLP2 Clapton coil, and a Sextuplet coil (S6), and the replaceable coils are less expensive. With a wonderful, easy to use build deck, this sub ohm tank has a steady e-liquid flow, no ebbs allowed.

Cons

The trade-off for a smaller and more mobile tank is a smaller juice capacity, 1.5ml less exactly. The replacement coils are still a little on the expensive side with a price of $30 for 5, but to mitigate the price, the RBA is a great alternative.

Sense Herakles Plus

Sense Herakles Plus

Price: $36
Wattage Range: 35-100W (0.4ohm) 20-80W (0.2ohm)
Tank Capacity: 3.5ml
Coils Available: 0.4ohm Kanthal, 0.2ohm SS & 0.2ohm Ni200
Wicking material: Cotton
RBA: None
Diameter: 22mm

Pros

This tank comes in three different color options—black, stainless silver, and rose gold. If you’re looking for something sexy and sleek, the rose gold is our favorite. The Herkales Tank by Sense was a master craft, and the upgrade is that, and more. What’s super rad about this tank, it that the airflow travels directly to the coil, making it one of the best sub ohm builds for flavor. And, if you want vape that runs a little cooler, this tank makes for a frosty vaping venture. This tank can also be the top-filled, a feature we always admire.

Cons

When vaping at higher wattages, there was some spit-back when using a new coil, and if you’re not careful, it may burn your tongue. But, once you’ve broken in the coils, about a third of the way through the first tank, the spit-back dissipates. We suggest using a 0.2ohm SS coil, rather than the Kanthal coil.

Aspire Cleito

Aspire Cleito

Price: $16.99 – $22.95

Wattage Range: 55-70W (0.2ohm) 40-60 (0.4ohm)

Tank Capacity: 3.5ml

Coils Available: 0.2ohm and 0.4ohm Clapton Kanthal

Wicking material: Organic Japanese Cotton

RBA: Coming soon!

Diameter: 22mm

Pros

If the name of the game is vapor production, this is one of the best sub ohm tanks for cloud chasing. Aspire’s new sub ohm clearomizer delivers airflow, giving you those big fluffy clouds you’re looking for. For an affordable prize, you get a 304 stainless steel constructed tank with Pyrex glass, 3.5ml e-liquid capacity, a top-fill design, a wide bore delrin drip tip, and Clapton coils! Aspire has outdone themselves this time.

Cons

The kit comes with silicon “Cleito Cuffs,” which you should probably utilize because the top cap gets pretty hot, especially with the tight airflow control. And, unfortunately, you have to empty the tank to change the coils.
